This year we also went to NYC, but we visited Eataly and did a workshop on Mozzarella Stretching! We toured the store sampling different types of bread, cheese and meat and then we explored lower Manhattan. We then travelled to upper Manhattan and had dinner at our favorite pizza place Don Antonio Pizzeria where students were treated to an authentic Neapolitan pizza! |

|
30 aprile, 2015 - Today we explored the Italian Embassy in Washington D.C.! How fun! Because we are studying types of buildings so this was perfect. We were welcome by the former Director of Studies Dr. Pennazzato who told us about the history of the building. He then walked us in the conference room where he told us a little more about the Italian language. We finished the visit walking around and getting some cappuccino at the Embassy Coffee Shop! What a treat! We then had lunch by in the art garden of the National Gallery of Art which we then visited through a little scavenger hunt to explore the Exhibit by Piero Di Cosimo and to pay particular attention to the buildings in his paintings. Our fantastic bus driver Karen took us back after a short bus drive through the Mall! What a perfect day!

Colonnello Roberto Vittori Presenting

22 novembre, 2013 - It was an... out of space experience!
It was truly an unforgettable day for the students of Italian at Bates Middle (AACPS), Germantown Elementary (AACPS), Roosevelt and Northwestern High Schools (PGCPS). On this special day, the 340 students present that day had the opportunity to meet Colonel Roberto Vittori, an Italian Astronaut born in Viterbo (Italy). The event was sponsored by the Education Office of the Italian Embassy in Washington D.C. Colonel Vittori, who is also an Italian Air Force officer and pilot, arrived at Bates at around 10:50am in his red car. He got out his car and grabbed his flight jacket and was escorted to Maryland Hall by Ms. Sileoni (lead Italian instructor at Bates Middle) where he began his mini-conference at 11:05 am sharp. Students were captivated by him. They clapped their hands, cheered, “wowed” and laughed with him during the presentation. The Colonel spoke about the origins of flight, the differences between atmospheric flight and space flight, the space shuttle, the space laboratory, the international space station, and the future of manned space exploration. |
Students may visit http://www.esa.int/esaKIDSit/index.html for some more "out of space" fun!
|
Did you know, for example, that it only takes 8 minutes to get into space? Obviously you need a space shuttle! The mini-conference ended with autographs, pictures, and Italian flags all around as souvenirs to remember this “spatial” experience. A big thank you goes to Dr. Lucia Dalla Montà (Director of studies at the Italian Embassy in Washington D.C.), Mr. DeRoo (Principal at Bates Middle), all the assistant principals at Bates, the tech staff at Maryland Hall, and all the teachers and chaperones that made this event a total and… out of space success!
